2022 Rural SIG meeting

It is with great pleasure that the Rural Special Interest Group (SIG) invites you to join us at the DoubleTree by Hilton Esplanade, Darwin, NT on June 24-25, 2022 for our annual meeting.

The title of the meeting “Top End tips for obstetric anaesthesia” sees a return to the popular theme of delivering high quality obstetric anaesthetic care by rural specialists and GP anaesthetists in rural and remote areas. Sessions will cover labour analgesia, anaesthetic management of caesarean sections, diseases of pregnancy and obstetric emergencies.

Our speakers will again be a mix of rural specialists, GP anaesthetists and obstetricians and invited obstetric anaesthesia experts. We are delighted to welcome Associate Professor Victoria Eley from The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and current chair of the Obstetric Anaesthesia SIG as our keynote speaker.

There will also be a series of workshops that will focus on the ANZCA CPD emergency scenarios.

We will be hosting a poolside welcome reception at the meeting venue on Friday evening and the meeting dinner on Saturday evening promises to be spectacular with our delegates enjoying a meticulously organised sunset event with a curated five-star menu complemented by the beautiful Top End backdrop.

We look forward to seeing you in Darwin.

Dr David Rowe and Dr Brian Spain, Co–convenors

Invited speakers

We will have a great line-up of speakers from different specialties and disciplines.

We would like to thank the all the speakers and workshop facilitators who donate many hours of their time to organise, prepare and present at the joint meeting.

In lieu of speaker gifts we will be making a donation to Purple House who offer remote dialysis, social support, aged-care and NDIS services, and run a bush medicine social enterprise called Bush Balm. Since the opening of the first dialysis clinic in Kintore in 2004, Purple House now runs 19 remote clinics and two mobile dialysis units called the Purple Truck, which allows patients to head back home to visit family, for festivals, funerals and other cultural business.

ACE is committed to a respectful and safe environment for all interactions inclusive of its conferences and meetings.

Our Rural SIG meeting is governed by all relevant ANZCA policies in relation to professional behaviour and conduct, including in relation to bullying, discrimination and sexual harassment.

Our Rural SIG meeting is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices. Sexual language and imagery or the use of personal photos without permission is not appropriate for any conference venue, including talks, workshops, parties, Twitter and other online media.

Conference participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the conference without a refund at the discretion of the conference organisers.

Sustainability at SIG events

As part of the ACE's commitment to environmental sustainability we have eliminated printed collateral and single use plastic. We no longer provide satchels, print programs or function tickets for the special interest groups meetings.

The SIG meeting utilises digital signage and where possible single use signage has been eliminated. If printed signage is required we ensure it is printed on material that is or can be recycled.

Since 2016, items we have eliminated from events include satchels, bottled water, and paper based tickets. Your support of these environmental changes has helped drive the success and strengthened the positive impact on our meeting footprint. We know working together, we will continue to do better.

Where possible we have eliminated plastic name badges and when these are required we source materials that have been treated with EcoPure®, an organic additive designed to enhance the speed of plastic decomposition in landfills. Delegates are encouraged to bring their own Keep Cups and use the water stations for re-filling water bottles.

ACE upholds a commitment to host events at venues that have a publicly available sustainability statement. We’ve worked with venues who have their organic waste converted to fertiliser and green electricity and have unused food given to people in need and diverting food waste from landfill.

We continue to strive towards fostering a more sustainable future for our members and the community.
